Channel Your Inspiration to Write
What was it that made you want to become a writer?
As a child, I read books voraciously. Mainly adventure and fantasy stories: Treasure Island, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Coral Island, Earthsea, Kidnapped… Whenever I finished a book, I would play out the stories in the garden; incorporating myself as a character. I would extend the storylines and created sequels. Eventually, I started writing them down, so I wouldn’t lost track.
As I grew older, the imaginary play stopped; but the writing continued. I started writing my own stories, and would read them out to my family in the evenings.
I never had a “Eureka!” moment; it was more a gradual understanding of myself and what made me fulfilled. By the time I was 15, I knew the only thing I wanted to be: was a published writer.
Get inspiration from your favourite writers
The stories that inspired me as a child, continue to inspire me today; and I often look to my favourite writers when I am struggling.
When drafting my first novel, I also read ‘Little Women,’ by Louisa M Alcott. The many descriptions of Jo March, scribbling away for hours on…
